Lifting the bar on Health & Safety
C&A Pumps’ site engineers had reported to their managers that the lifting equipment they were using to perform installations and carry out reactive maintenance on pumps, was itself creating risks because of its weight and bulk. This made the equipment difficult to erect on site and increased the potential for accidents associated with its use. We looked at the equipment available and found a new portable lifting solution that eliminates most of the problems previously encountered by our engineers. Fully compliant with the Lifting Operations and Lifting Equipment Regulations 1998; the equipment is produced from aluminium–giving it excellent strength and durability. Its adaptable legs make the equipment suitable for even the most uneven ground, and an adjustable beam means that its footprint can be reduced if space is at a premium. The product’s 1.6m long beam houses a spirit level, allowing engineers to ensure it is level before putting it to use. The beam incorporates two trolleys allowing for the movement of objects up to a weight of 500kg, and also features locking clips to prevent the lifting point from moving. The component parts of the equipment are very lightweight, and are easily transportable with an optional purpose-built transport system. It is also designed to be self supporting while the engineer erects the frame–enabling single man operation. Secure support points are provided for attachment of fall arrest equipment to BSEN 360, EN 1496 Class B and personnel riding capability, in compliance with Confined Space Regulations 1997. |
