Newport CSO Pumping Station Pump RefurbishmentClick on the photographs above to view larger versions During 2009 C&A performed the first of fifteen pump refurbishments called for as part of Northumbrian Water Ltd's Lustrum Beck CSO scheme on Teesside. The Lustrum Beck CSO scheme was initiated by NWL's Operations Department, who were seeing regular issues with the long-shaft pumps used to remove excess floodwater from the sewer system into a nearby watercourse. Initially, C&A were taken on board by NWL to survey the equipment at each of the five sites involved in the scheme, and then to provide a proposal for carrying out any works which were found to be necessary. This proposal was to include a programme of works which could be used by NWL to forecast the completion of all fifteen pump refurbishments. Newport was chosen as the first station to be addressed, and C&A attended site to remove the first pump and transport it to workshops for an initial strip and report. The report provided to NWL included a cost breakdown detailing what would be required to return the pump to service as per its original specification when first installed in the 1980s. With the works detailed by C&A's report approved, the pump was fully refurbished and inspected before being transported back to site and reinstalled by C&A. Commissioning of the pump could not be carried out immediately, as the discharge consent provided by the Environment Agency prohibited the unit from being run outside of storm conditions. Once appropriate conditions arrived, the pump was commissioned and it will now take the main duty of the station until the remaining two pumps undergo a similar refurbishment over the coming months. As of May 2010, another pump has been successfully completed, with a further three to be delivered to C&A for refurbishment in June. |
